V with Bite

Has anyone else been watching True Blood? Well, judging by the viewing figures, a lot of people think its fang-tastic (sorry)

The first episode of the vampire drama, which stars Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer, pulled in 1.56m viewers (10.2%) between 10pm and 11.20pm and a further 145k (1.9%) tuned in on timeshift.

Not only am I little obsessed with the programme, I also love this innovative use of outdoor in New Zealand to promote the show – ready made stakes!

Firstly I’ll admit to having not watched any of this, and I probably never will. You see I have an issue with programming that attempts to serialise a concept and in the process end up taming the original material. Look at Buffy.. what a load of sassy high-school rubbish.

When you consider the wider vampire universe, the lore, the long history of film making etc.. You can’t help but see how this (much like Buffy) just doesn’t stack up against classics like; Cronos, or Interview with a Vampire. And what of modern interpretations like Daywatch & Nightwatch, or animations like Blood. Even the more whimsical side of the universe is delivered well in From Dusk Til Dawn, or Blade.

Much like The City or The Hills, it does nothing to extend the genre.. in fact, that would be a great crossover episode…. Vampires in The City; Whitney’s Revenge!

Waggy you seem to have quite a knowledge about the The City

The City ‘bites’ as well as The Hills….all spin-offs on the ‘real-life’ of people in the O.C. that was fabricated after a TV Show (the O.C).

As for True Blood I think it was smart to catch onto a fad while they can. Look how Merlin attempted to catch onto the whole wizard fantasy brought about by Harry Potter.

With people constantly saying kids are not reading anough or how books are on the decline it seems that most of our entertainment is being pushed from novels. i.e. I am Legend is based off a book and look how cool Zombies are now with Zombieland out in cinemas, Left 4 Dead is a massive videogame (With Left 4 Dead 2 releasing this November)……and who said press was dead.

Maybe I should have been clearer. When I said ‘obsessed with the programme’ I actually meant ‘I really fancy Eric in True Blood’.
